The Source: In humans, the only truly totipotent cell is the fertilized egg (zygote) and the cells produced by the first few divisions (up to approximately the 4-cell stage).
The Distinction: While a Pluripotent cell can make a heart, a brain, or a lung, it cannot create a placenta. A Totipotent cell is the only cell type that carries the "total" manual for an entire living system, including its life-support structures.
